Troop 288 Hiking Merit Badge
Saturday November 9, 2019
Little Sugar Creek Greenway: Tyvola Rd to I-485 (out & back), 07:00 - 10:30
Little Sugar Creek Greenway: Brandywine to E 15th St. (out & back) 11:00 - 15:00
The Little Sugar Creek Greenway (LSC) hike consisted of two sections; each a distance of 5 miles out and then return, for a section total of 10 miles. Completing both sections for a total of 20 miles were Scouts James and Nathan. New to Troop 288, Scout Rhys hiked 5 miles of the LSC Tyvola section with his Dad Mr. Keiffer, and Peyton completed the full out and back of LSC Tyvola with his parents and older sister. Scouts Ethan and Gavin completed the full out and back of LSC Brandywine with their Dad Mr. Sutthoff (along with Scouts James, Nathan and Mr. Peine and Mr. Keane).
The morning started with a cold chill in the air, with temperatures at day-break around 26 F. While dressed-to-impress to stay warm, the group witnessed several white-tailed deer, mallards swimming in the creek, great blue heron hunting for breakfast, hawks circling above and other bird species foraging for berries in the bushes.
The section of LSC on Brandywine took in more 'art' than nature observations but also occasional great views of the Charlotte Uptown.
The Scouts had fun along the way and took time to take a few well earned breaks, including a delicious stop at the Wendy's at Charlottetowne Ave (chocolate frosty anyone?!)
These Scouts might be a little sore on Sunday, but they each did a great job working towards their hiking merit badge and learned a little more along the way. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations Nathan and James for completing your 20-miler!!
