Hike #3 turned out to be at Kings Mountain State Park. The original plan was to hike at Stone Mountain in North Carolina but forecasted inclement weather changed the plans Friday afternoon for safety reasons. However, this hike is the second ten mile hike in the series of three to be completed for the hiking merit badge.
Our hike of Kings Mountain (approximately 10.2 miles, 4-hrs 15-min) included a loop course on the Civilian Conservation Corps Trail that circumnavigates Lake York and passes two former Civilian Conservation Corps camps. Kings Mountain State Park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression (among many other state and national parks). The program, created by President Roosevelt, was designed to provide employment while also addressing national conservation and recreation needs. The historical significance was discussed during the hike.
